Agnes' name means "pure" in Greek and "lamb" in Latin. She lived around the year 300, a time of terrible persecution. This beautiful 13-year-old daughter of Roman nobles consecrated herself to Christ and refused to marry. When her suitors attempted to force her into impurity, Agnes resisted, strong in her love of Christ. She was beheaded for her faith, and is mentioned in the first Eucharistic Prayer.
