Faith and science worked in tandem throughout the life of the “Doctor of the Poor.” From a young age, José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros possessed a heart for service, a bright mind, and deep faith.
Drawn to the medical field, he studied around the world, from Caracas to Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Naples. He specialized in bacteriology and, upon his return to Venezuela, brought modern medical practices to the country. He even helped to establish the first physiology laboratory.
While his experience and skill could have earned him a lucrative career, José saw his work as a special vocation to serve God through his patients. He treated the poorest people, often refusing to charge them anything and even purchasing medicine for those who could not afford it. Each person he served was treated with the highest care and dignity, and witnessed the love of God through José.
